However, most people confuse these two attributes and don\u2019t really know what\u2019s the difference between them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alt text<\/strong> \u2013 is a brief description of the image (for screen readers and for search engines too). If the image doesn&#8217;t load, the alt will be displayed instead.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Title<\/strong> <strong>text<\/strong> \u2013 is a tooltip text that appears when the mouse moves over the image. Tooltips don\u2019t appear on mobile phones and other touch devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you look at the image below, you can see that the<strong> alt text for the broken image appears <\/strong>(on the left side of the image). The example on the right shows how the <strong>title attribute\u2019s tooltip appears<\/strong> when the cursor goes over the image.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Alt-vs-title-text-example.png\" alt=\"ALT text vs title text difference example\" class=\"wp-image-4239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Alt-vs-title-text-example.png 800w, https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Alt-vs-title-text-example-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Alt-vs-title-text-example-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If no alt text or title text exist for the image, it will be displayed as an empty image and users won\u2019t be able to see anything.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article we will talk mostly about alt attributes and the reasons why you need to use them.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>The importance of Alt attributes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are five reasons <a href=\"https:\/\/upcity.com\/experts\/what-is-alt-text\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">why it is important to add alt text<\/a> to all your images:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>1. Alt text can help images rank better in Google Images<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to<a href=\"https:\/\/sparktoro.com\/blog\/less-than-half-of-google-searches-now-result-in-a-click\/\"> SparkToro <\/a>and Jumpshot study from 2019 (see the pie chart below), Google Images is the second largest search engine after Google.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/sparktoro-search-engine-market-share-q2-2019.png\" alt=\"Sparktoro search engine market share Q2 2019\" class=\"wp-image-4242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/sparktoro-search-engine-market-share-q2-2019.png 1024w, https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/sparktoro-search-engine-market-share-q2-2019-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/sparktoro-search-engine-market-share-q2-2019-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Image source: <a href=\"https:\/\/images.sparktoro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/search-engine-market-share-q2-2019.png\">https:\/\/images.sparktoro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/search-engine-market-share-q2-2019.png<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By adding alt text to your images, they can start appearing for relevant long-tail keyword searches on Google Images and <strong>generate traffic <\/strong>to your website.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This works well especially for sectors when people want to see the product before they make a purchase (such as food, fashion,&#8230;).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Image box in Google search results&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Optimizing images is important not just for <a href=\"https:\/\/images.google.com\/\">Google Images<\/a> search, but also for full text searches as Google has been constantly adding more and more <a href=\"https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/en\/article\/list-of-serp-features-on-google\/\">SERP features<\/a> to a large number of search queries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the example below, you can see that search results for \u201ccalendar template\u201d return the \u201c<strong>Images box<\/strong>\u201d at the top of the SERP and the rest of organic search results are \u201chidden\u201d below this feature.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/calendar-template-images-box-857x1024.png\" alt=\"Calendar template images box in SERP\" class=\"wp-image-4245\" width=\"429\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/calendar-template-images-box-857x1024.png 857w, https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/calendar-template-images-box-251x300.png 251w, https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/calendar-template-images-box-768x918.png 768w, https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/calendar-template-images-box.png 1098w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 429px) 100vw, 429px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>For images without alt text would be really difficult to appear for this type of search query. If you don\u2019t add alt text to your images, you are also potentially losing out on customers and valuable traffic to your website.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google\u2019s John Mu also confirmed the importance of alt text for image SEO:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Alt text is extremely helpful for Google Images &#8212; if you want your images to rank there. Even if you use lazy-loading, you know which image will be loaded, so get that information in there as early as possible &amp; test what it renders as.<\/p>\u2014 \ud83c\udf4c John \ud83c\udf4c (@JohnMu) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JohnMu\/status\/1036901608880254976?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 4, 2018<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/center>\n\n\n\n<h3>2.&nbsp; Alt text allows non-visual readers to understand the images&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Worldwide, more than 39 million people are blind, and <a href=\"https:\/\/research.fb.com\/blog\/2017\/02\/accessibility-research-developing-automatic-alt-text-for-facebook-screen-reader-users\/\">more than 246 million have a severe visual impairment<\/a>. Most people with visual disabilities use screen readers that allow them to use their devices and read content. If the alt tag contains no text, this tells screen readers to <strong>ignore<\/strong> the image. Occasionally, if no alt text is present, the screen reader will also read the file name for the image instead. But it often happens that this name is very generic (for example: <strong>IMG_21646486.jpg<\/strong>) and doesn\u2019t explain what the image actually contains. For this reason, it is so important to make the image title <strong>simple and descriptive<\/strong> to avoid any major distractions to those who use screen reading technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By adding alt text to your images you help visually impaired people understand your message as their screen readers will be able to read your images too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>3. Alt text gives context to an image<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To make your content more readable, it\u2019s important to use appealing images to break the text up into digestible and aesthetically pleasing chunks. However, images should serve a purpose, they\u2019re not there just to look pretty. By including alt attributes you help search engines further understand the subject matter of the images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alt text has to be relevant to your content (we will talk about this more further down this post) so search engines better understand what the page is about.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, if you write an article about laptops, you can add alternative text for the image that says \u201cStylish laptop Acer Aspire 5 in blue color\u201d to help the search engine understand the content on your page.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>4. Alt text is considered equivalent to anchor text (for linked images)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to hyperlinks, text is the king. However, a link does not have to be just text. It can be an image or any other HTML element.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any image that is within a link should have alt text which identifies the purpose of the link. Alt text for linked images is considered equivalent to <a href=\"https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/en\/article\/what-is-anchor-text\/\">anchor text<\/a>. It represents an opportunity to communicate the meaning and context of your page to Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>5. Alt text is displayed if an image fails to load<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As we previously mentioned (or as you could see in our previous example), the <strong>alternative attribute will be displayed in place of the image <\/strong>if the image fails to load properly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If no alt text is provided, then this will be empty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>How to check alt text?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3>Manual check&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the fastest ways to find out if you are using alt text for your images is to check it in the source code of any webpage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, you need to visit the webpage (i.e. a blog post) you want to check for alt tags. Then right-click and select \u2018<strong>Inspect<\/strong>\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you should be able to view the source code of your page with the alt text and other attributes for the image:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"534\" height=\"65\" src=\"https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/example-of-alt-text-source-code.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/example-of-alt-text-source-code.png 534w, https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/example-of-alt-text-source-code-300x37.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In this instance, you can actually see the alt tag as it\u2019s already been added to the image. It also shows the <strong>Competitors settings in Marketing Miner project<\/strong> value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t find <strong>alt=\u201d\u201d<\/strong> value right next to the images, it means that <strong>they don\u2019t have any<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Marketing Miner &#8211; Content Analysis miner&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need to go over hundreds or thousands of images to find out if they have any alt attribute added, it just makes sense to not have to do it manually, right?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be done with automation tools (so called <strong>crawlers<\/strong>), that go through all landing pages, check all images and list those that don\u2019t have any alternative attribute added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use can use our <a href=\"https:\/\/help.marketingminer.com\/en\/article\/content-analysis\/\">Content analysis miner<\/a> to get the following data:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Number of images<\/strong> \u2013 number of images that have been found on the crawled page<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Images without alt text<\/strong> \u2013 number of images without alt text&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>How to optimize your alt text&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When writing alt text, remember that you are writing a description for someone who can&#8217;t see the image. Close your eyes and use a screen reader to read you alt text. Based on this information, try to imagine what you have just heard. Does your vision represent what the image shows? Then your alt text is correct!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are 5 tips to help you write effective alt text:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Be short and descriptive <\/strong>&#8211; Try to be succinct to describe the image. Most screen readers cut off alt text at around 125 characters so try to keep it to that character count or less.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be relevant <\/strong>&#8211; When writing your alt text, ask yourself if you would understand the relevance if you couldn\u2019t see the image. It should contain a relevant target keyword and clear description of the image to help search engines understand the context.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avoid keyword stuffing<\/strong> &#8211; Focus on providing context to the image with including your keywords. But don&#8217;t go over board with your keywords!&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Be precise<\/strong> &#8211; You should be able to precisely describe the content of your images (but at the same time, you need to be short and descriptive enough as we mentioned above).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t use phrases \u201c<\/strong><strong><em>image of<\/em><\/strong><strong>\u201d to describe the image<\/strong> &#8211;
